Driving Lessons
by Karen K. Lewis
"Hey, Will," I say.
"Yeah?"
"You need to anticipate stuff that might go wrong."
"Like what?"
We're across Salmon Creek Bridge now, and Will confidently accelerates to the posted 55 mph speed limit.
"Like, what if a deer jumps into the road ahead?"
"Oh," he replies.
"What would you do?"
"Stop," he says with a get real mom, do you think I'm stupid tone.
I find this piece of the creative writing meaning full because the story is describing how a mother feels about teaching his son how to drive. Her son is beginning a new chapter in his life by learning how to drive. He will be exposed to so many dangers that he did not think about before. His mother is aware of all the dangers and she is trying to get him emotionally and physically ready by trying to teach him how to drive and stay alert while driving. She mentions some situations that might happen while he is behind the wheel, her son responds to her like he knows exactly what to do but his mom lets him know that their is more to do than just act. He has to think about what to do first. She wants to make her son realize that there are many dangers in the world.
